Microsoft Office
If you are moving from a Windows machine, it is likely you have been using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Apple does have built-in some equivalents (Pages, Numbers, and KeyNote), which will all open MS Office files, but you may prefer to use the programs you are familiar with. Microsoft produces MacOS versions of the Office programs.
Your Uni appointment may give you free access to these, so don't pay out any money until you are sure you can't get them free.

Many companies are trying to get you to rent their programs on a monthly basis, rather than buy them outright. I prefer to avoid ongoing trickle-expenditures if possible.

2) How to install Windows 10 on a Mac using Boot Camp Assistant
This explains it pretty well.
It is possible that you can get Microsoft 365 University as part of your University employment. They may also give you a 'Product Key' for the Windows OS, which you will need during the setup. The alternative is to pay for a key to 'Windows Home'.

1) First steps
How To Set Up a New Mac
Do each step except the Screen Time section. Just hit 'Do this later' for that one, but it is useful to set up an Apple ID. If there is any possibility that you will lose your Uni email address in the future, there might be a case for using your Gmail address (dougsellman28@gmail.com) together with a password that you can reliably remember.
Setting Up MacBook Pro
- Download Windows Migration Assistant (On your Windows PC)
- Use Migration Assistant to transfer your contacts, calendars, email accounts, and more from your Windows PC to the appropriate places on your Mac.
